While touring France, we had an opportunity to visit Beaune, which is in the province of Burgundy. Hotel Dieu was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife, Guigone de Salins. The express purpose of this hospital was to provide medical help and comfort to the impoverished. Beds were built with drapes for privacy. The ill were cared for by Nicolas, his wife and many nuns. They were given food and medical attention. There is still care for the ill in this hospital.
The Hospices de Beaune received the first patient on 1 January 1452. Elderly, disabled and sick people, with orphans, women about to give birth and the destitute have all been uninterruptedly welcomed for treatment and refuge, from the Middle Ages until today.
When visiting this museum, you will see the beds, a chapel, kitchens, a pharmacy as well as the beautiful courtyard and architecture..
