The Biltmore Estate was built by George Washington Vanderbilt and is the largest privately owned home in the United States. At 178,926 sq feet, it is an amazing sight to behold. Built between 1889 -1895, it contains all the latest conveniences of the day. Careful attention to every minute detail makes this home an architectural wonder with over 250 rooms.
The estate has its own greenhouse and winery which was added later. Over 1 million visitors visit this pieced of history every year.
One interesting historical fact-- it was used as a hiding place for great art during World War II. Art from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC was brought down by train in the event of an attack. One painting was Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington, plus works by Rembrandt and other famous artists.
