Description
This historical image of an early Illinois Capitol was created by Luther Fine Art.
The first capital of Illinois was located on the Mississippi River . Residents soon found out that it was in a flood zone and decided to move it. Wanting to keep the capital in central Illinois, the small town of Vandalia was chosen. The first capitol building there was used Federal-style white building which served as the Illinois State Capitol from 1836-1839 is impressive with its high ceilings, tall windows and vintage furnishings. At the top of the broad, curving staircase are the Senate and House of Representatives chambers, where Abraham Lincoln began his historical political career for the grand sum of $4 a day. (Wikipedia)
